Pokémon spin-off game

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team is the part of the matched pair of Pokemon games for handheld consoles. The storyline focuses on you - a human turned Pokémon. You have developed amnesia but you will find your way into a rescue team with a partner Pokémon. As the game progresses, you will learn more about your identity. The gameplay revolves around randomly changing dungeons. Your job is to explore these dungeons with your Pokémon. Your strategy must revolve around you or your partner using turn-based moves.

Distinct storyline

You will begin the game by taking a personality quiz. You could be one of these sixteen Pokémon: Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Charmander, Cyndaquil, Totodile, Chikorita, Treecko, Torchic, Mudkip, Pikachu, Eevee, Machop, Cubone, Psyduck, Meowth, and Skitty. Once the game has determined which Pokémon you have transformed into, you will choose your partner Pokémon. You can only pick one from the first ten stated above, but you can not choose one that is the same type as you are.

The game takes a mission-based approach with many jobs. You will receive these jobs through the mail, story events, rescue operations or on the bulletin board. Once you have successfully completed a job, you will receive a reward or Rescue Points. These are crucial if you want to increase your team’s rank. These jobs will take place in the dungeons, where there are wild Pokémon that will battle against your team.

These battles are turn-based. So, you have to create a fighting strategy. You can choose between the four moves your Pokémon knows, the attack button, or fling projectiles and other items. You will fail in your mission if you or your partner is defeated.

Modest gameplay

The core of the game is its turn-based battles. It is fun, but it lacks variety. You can enhance the gaming experience by customizing your attacks, linking moves together, adding team members, and adjusting your Pokémon’s AI routines. So, it doesn't really matter which Pokémon you choose. What matters more is your ability to hone their skill set.

The structure of the gameplay works well for handheld games. You will be managing your daily tasks, which is good if you are into quick-shot experiences. The game is designed for players that want to pop in-and-out of a game. Each job is capped off with a trip home, giving you a sense of success regardless of how much or how little the story has progressed.

A light and refreshing spin-off

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team is for fans that only want to dedicate a few hours or even a few minutes of game time. It has a plot with lots of twists and turns, which could motivate you to finish the missions all the more. However, the turn-based gameplay and task-oriented missions lack the variety needed for an extensive storyline. The jobs can feel mundane as you won’t notice a lot of changes. But, if you are looking for portable, modest gameplay, Red Rescue succeeds in that genre.

PROS

  • Refreshing storyline
  • Simple gameplay instructions

CONS

  • Repetitive missions
  • Lackluster customisation options
